These operations were carried out using Bryce 4.

The first step is select the sky to Simple Black Background. Then select and delete the groundplane. This will be an explosion in outer space.
Create a Radial Light. Now rotate the light -90 degrees around the X axis and -45 degrees around the Y axis. This will make the top or north pole of the light sphere point directly towards you (I always use Director's View when composing images).
Now, with the light selected, click on the E button alongside it and check Volume Visible Light, Infinite Light and No Falloff as shown to the left. Also set the Brightness and Softness to 100. |

Now, still in the light editor, click on Texture Gels. Go to the Tutorials section and apply Fire Texture 1. Don't use the fire textures in the Complex group as they won't work.
Enlarge the light to fill the screen and render - you should see something like this to the left.
Click on the M button and set the scale to say 117% as shown to the left.
Now set the Base Density, Edge Softness, Fuzzy Factor and Quality/Speed to the values shown at the left. You don't have to be exact. |
When you render you should see something like this.
This is your basic explosion.
Now you can experiment but save the basic model first.
Try varying the scale in the Material Editor. Rotate and flatten the light slightly (see left).
Alter the shading from Light Sensitive to Flat Shading for a dramatic colour change.
Alter the Base Density and if you're feeling really brave go into the DTE and play.

Have fun ....... Peter.
